Supermarket customers using intelligent shopping carts buy more items and spend more money per shopping round, shows a recent consumer study from PintoCXI. According to cart manufacturers Smartcart Ltd results clearly demonstrate how the traditional retail sector can challenge web-based retail giants by investing in innovation and the customer experience.
PintoCXI, a part of the Pinto Design, performed a shopper study in a midsize supermarket in Finland. The study was done in January 2019 and the object was to determine how use of Smartcart affects the shopper behaviour and especially how it affects the average purchase per shopper.
The results showed that while the average shopper bought 16,57 products each, the Smartcart users bought 25,75 products each. Regarding the number of euros spent, the same trend continued. On average a shopper spent 40,58 € while Smartcart users had an average of 70,78 € each. Smartcart users average shopping round lasted for 25 minutes.
“Whether you are designing a sculpture, business or a product, it always comes down to how much it speaks to the viewer, or the user like in this case. At Pinto we’ve been privileged to work with truly innovative players that dare to challenge old beliefs and re-invent even the most traditional businesses. As a Smartcart user myself, this was a very eye-opening research project”, states Jukka Tuhkanen, CEO at Pinto Design.
“After the previous research regarding shopper buying conversion resulted in an astonishing 16%, we did expect this number to be high as well. But I doubt anybody anticipated it to be this high. This study verifies how much the traditional retailer still can affect the shopping experience in order to be competitive against upcoming threats, like Amazon”, says Petteri Heiman, CEO at Smartcart Ltd.
