Europe’s leading manufacturer of intelligent shopping carts and digital retail infrastructure, Smartcart Ltd, are in the process of transforming their unique shopping carts into personal payment terminals. Smartcarts will be updated with top-of-the-line barcode scanning by Swiss IT pioneers Scandit, adding a new dimension to an already slick shopping experience.
One of Smartcart’s pivotal goals is to bring the benefits of self-checkout to the shopping cart itself. A key function of this is the ability to quickly and accurately identify products by their barcodes.
“In order to provide the best possible customer experience, we have decided to partner with the leading company in computer vision — Scandit,” says Tobias Hannus, CTO of Smartcart Ltd.
“With Scandit’s cutting-edge technology, we are able to provide the same accuracy and speed in scanning barcodes that customers are used to with dedicated self-checkouts.”
Scandit enables enterprises and consumers to change the way they interact with everyday objects and augment the physical world with real-time data captured by scanning barcodes and recognizing text, objects, and other visual identifiers using smartphones, tablets, wearables, drones, and robots.
Scandit’s mobile data capture platform is built on proprietary computer vision, augmented reality, and machine learning technologies. Companies in industries such as retail, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare use Scandit’s technology to create and power mobile apps for crucial enterprise workflows such as mobile point of sale, mobile shopping, self-checkout, inventory management, and proof of delivery.
Many of the world’s most innovative and successful companies are benefiting from Scandit’s enterprise-grade software, including Sephora, Louis Vuitton, DHL, and Levi Strauss & Co.
“Scandit’s technology is able to identify barcodes via the cart’s integrated tablet camera with impressive speed and accuracy. The customer only needs to hold the product in front of the camera for a minimal amount of time in order to have it identified by Smartcart. In addition to this, the orientation of the barcode doesn’t matter, and barcodes are also read from shiny and curved surfaces with ease. This is why the partnership with Scandit will bring the Smartcart to the next level,” says Mr Hannus.
“Smartcart has developed a powerful way to blend the digital and physical shopping experience,” said Samuel Mueller, CEO of Scandit. “We’re delighted that they’re bringing the performance and accuracy of our mobile computer vision technology to their intelligent shopping carts.”
